I have enjoyed a successful career in property. My experience spans design, construction, development and finance roles for international property developers and banks. This culminated in founding a mid-tier consulting firm that was recently acquired by a global real estate services company.

What fuels my passion for public education

I was very lucky to attend a NSW country public school, Singleton High School. I had some teachers that really influenced, encouraged and supported my ambitions. Many gave me every opportunity to do my best. Their support gave me the confidence and drive to pursue my goals of further education and a fulfilling career.

It wasn’t until later in life that I realised how much harder it is for secondary school kids attending country schools to go on to further study or develop a career out of town – should they choose. In witnessing the disparity of opportunity between those students educated in major cities to those attending country schools, I came to appreciate just how lucky I had been. Students’ attending country public schools are often not surrounded by mentors and role models who have undertaken tertiary education. As a result, it is not always strongly suggested, or even front-of-mind as a pathway option. Similarly, the financial burdens of leaving home and residing in a city can be a significant deterrent to many considering further education.

Being a PEF mentor to year 11 and 12 country school kids has been one of the most worthwhile things that I have ever done. At a minimum, you are another experienced adult for whom students can ask a question and receive some guidance or advice. At its best, mentoring is an opportunity to influence great outcomes and positively change peoples’ lives.
